Tumors are abnormal lumps of tissues or cells which have proliferated—grown out of control. They can be non-cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant). Chaga medicinal mushroom prevents tumor proliferation

A study from The Department of Neurosurgery, The Affiliated Hospital of Beihua University (China) investigated the effect polysaccharides extracted from the medicinal mushroom Chaga would have on human neurogliocytoma cells. Chaga has already been shown to have anti-cancer effects, and has a powerful antioxidant content. Other studies indicate it could become a potential anti-cancer agent, in part because it causes no damage to healthy cells.

In this study, different concentrations of the Chaga extract were added to the cells at 24, 48, and 72 hours. The Chaga extract dramatically increased the expression of caspase-3: a protein which promotes programmed cell death (apoptosis). Chaga polysaccharides thus prevented the tumor cells from spreading
