Medicinal mushrooms are becoming an important ingredient in developing new drugs and treatments to treat cancer. An in vitro study investigates the effect Chaga extracts have on human neurogliocytoma cells. Will Chaga help us cure tumours in the future?

Tumors are abnormal lumps of tissues or cells which have proliferated—grown out of control. They can be non-cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant). Cancerous, malignant tumors can spread to other parts of the body. This proliferation is beyond the control of our immune system. Cancerous tumors form when the body’s defence mechanism cannot prevent damaged cells from dividing. Damaged cells can infect healthy DNA, spreading the damage and overwhelming our natural antibodies.

Tumors are treated by several means. Some can be removed with surgery, and frequently followed up with radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Sometimes chemotherapy is needed to shrink the tumor before surgery. But chemotherapy is not yet a magic bullet, and can have side effects so severe they destroy quality of life. Chemotherapy drugs target rapidly dividing cells, which include white blood cells in addition to cancer cells. New treatments are being researched worldwide, including treatments using ingredients derived from medicinal mushrooms.

Chaga medicinal mushroom prevents tumor proliferation

A study from The Department of Neurosurgery, The Affiliated Hospital of Beihua University (China) investigated the effect polysaccharides extracted from the medicinal mushroom Chaga would have on human neurogliocytoma cells. Chaga has already been shown to have anti-cancer effects, and has a powerful antioxidant content. Other studies indicate it could become a potential anti-cancer agent, in part because it causes no damage to healthy cells.

In this study, different concentrations of the Chaga extract were added to the cells at 24, 48, and 72 hours. The Chaga extract dramatically increased the expression of caspase-3: a protein which promotes programmed cell death (apoptosis). Chaga polysaccharides thus prevented the tumor cells from spreading

. This is great hope for people with cancer tumors who would like a healthy alternative and adjunct cancer therapy to obliterate the disease and return to a normal life.
